A Church Is Not a Stage Set

I was raised Catholic, but became an Episcopalian about 35 years ago. And today I have never been prouder to be a member of the Episcopal Church.

Donald Trump used an historic Episcopal church in Washington, DC--St. John's, located on the other side of Lafayette Park from the White House--as little more than a backdrop for a photo op, something that will undoubtedly turn up in a campaign ad in short order. To do so, police and Secret Service stormed a peaceful gathering in the park and on the plaza between the park and the church with tear gas and "flash-bang" grenades. What was happening in that gathering? For the most part, protestors were being given first-aid and water.

Trump didn't ask permission or even inform the rector of St. John's that he was coming; nor did he inform the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde. They and the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, Michael Curry, issued statements opposing Trump's actions.

That anyone who calls themselves "Christian" can defend these actions of the President is appalling.
